Sacrament of Penance
"Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained'" (Cor 5.18).
Those who approach the sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God's mercy for the offense committed against him, and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins and which by charity, by example, and by prayer labors for their conversion.
Sacrament of Eucharist
"Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me." (Jn 13.15)
The holy Eucharist, along with Baptism and Confirmation is a sacrament of Christian initiation. At the Last Supper, our Savior, Jesus Christ instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood. The sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated through the Eucharist and is a memorial of his death and resurrection.
Preparation for Sacraments
Parents seeking First Penance (Reconciliation) and First Holy Communion (Eucharist) for their child are encouraged to contact the Director Christian Formation for more information about registering. Children must at least be entering the second grade to begin preparation. The role of parents as the first and best educators of their children is emphasized. A parent attends the preparation sessions with the child.
Children preparing for the sacraments are to be enrolled in the parish Christian Formation process OR attend a Catholic School during the current year in addition to sacramental preparation. Children prepare for the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation) prior to preparation for First Holy Communion. Children may prepare for both sacraments within the same calendar year.
Children who are 7 years or older and have not been baptized in the Roman Catholic Church are invited to participate in RICA Process (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and Children) at OLMC. See our Initiation page for more information.
